Edmonton councillors asked staff Monday if the city’s policy can be changed so adoptable stray cats and dogs are not put down.
Last year, 1,451 cats and 301 dogs were euthanized by Edmonton’s Animal Control Services and some councillors say the city needs to adopt a new policy to bring those numbers down.
“If it’s a healthy, adoptable animal, regardless of breed or age or shelter capacity, you will not euthanize them,” Coun. Karen Leibovici said. CBC.CA
Despite the encouragement of Edmonton councillors towards saving the lives of healthy, savable animals, a city report came to the conclusion that Edmonton could NOT have a No Kill shelter system.
Why?
They would run out of space in the shelter.
Attention Edmonton councillors!
No Kill sheltering means adoption, volunteering, foster care, eliminating barriers and improving access to low-cost and free spay & neuter … It has nothing to do with eternally housing animals in shelters!
Councillors, you are on the right track. Keep it up. You will be successful in the end … and the animals are counting on you!
